A dapper little pumpkin gentleman stepped from the moss as though he had been expected all along. His round orange head was crowned with a tiny black top hat, tilted just enough to suggest manners without surrendering mischief. He wore a white coat fastened with old brass buttons and a great black ruffle at his throat, while broad dark wings arched behind him like the remnants of some nocturnal masquerade.
